NCERT Solutions for Class 12 Biology Chapter 3 Reproductive Health

NCERT Solutions for Class 12 Biology Chapter 3 Reproductive Health covers reproductive and child health care, birth control methods, medical termination of pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and infertility treatments.

Overview of Topics & Subtopics (Click to Jump)

1. Reproductive and Child Health Care

Short Note:

• Reproductive health refers to a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being in all aspects of reproduction, and government programmes like RCH (Reproductive and Child Health Care) aim to create awareness among people about reproductive processes and safe practices.

• Steps to improve reproductive health include sex education in schools, awareness about reproductive organs, safe sexual practices, menstrual hygiene, and providing medical facilities and care for pregnant mothers and infants.

2. Population Control and Birth Control Methods

Short Note:

• Rapid population growth has necessitated birth control measures, broadly classified into natural methods (periodic abstinence, withdrawal), barrier methods (condoms, diaphragms), IUDs (intra-uterine devices like Copper-T), oral contraceptives (hormonal pills), and surgical methods (vasectomy in males, tubectomy in females).

• An ideal contraceptive should be user-friendly, easily available, effective, reversible, and have no or minimal side effects.

3. Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) and STIs

Short Note:

• MTP, or induced abortion, is legally permitted in India under specific conditions and is considered relatively safe up to 12 weeks, though it can carry health risks and ethical/social concerns if misused, particularly for sex selection.

• Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), such as gonorrhoea, syphilis, and HIV/AIDS, are infections transmitted through sexual contact; early detection and treatment, along with preventive practices like avoiding sex with unknown/multiple partners and using condoms, help control their spread.

4. Infertility and Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART)

Short Note:

• Infertility, the inability to conceive despite unprotected intercourse, can result from physical, congenital, hormonal or psychological causes, and can affect either partner.

• Assisted Reproductive Technologies help infertile couples have children, including IVF (in vitro fertilisation, popularly called the 'test tube baby' technique), ZIFT (transfer of zygote into the fallopian tube), GIFT (transfer of gametes into the fallopian tube), and artificial insemination.

NCERT Textbook Exercise Questions

Q1: What are the various methods of contraception, and what makes an ideal contraceptive?
Answer: Contraceptive methods include natural methods (periodic abstinence, withdrawal, lactational amenorrhea), barrier methods (condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps), intra-uterine devices, oral hormonal pills, and permanent surgical methods (vasectomy and tubectomy). An ideal contraceptive should be user-friendly, easily available, effective, reversible with minimal side effects, and should not interfere with the user's sexual drive.
Q2: Explain the technique of IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation).
Answer: In IVF, eggs collected from the female partner (or a donor) and sperm collected from the male partner (or a donor) are induced to fuse under laboratory conditions outside the body to form a zygote. The resulting zygote or an early embryo (up to 8 blastomeres) is then transferred into the fallopian tube (ZIFT) or a more developed embryo is transferred into the uterus (IUT) to establish pregnancy.
Q3: What are the main causes of infertility, and how can they be treated?
Answer: Infertility can result from physical, congenital, or genetic causes, diseases, drug use, immunological problems, or hormonal imbalances in either partner. Depending on the cause, treatment options range from medication and surgical correction to assisted reproductive technologies such as IVF, GIFT, ZIFT, and artificial insemination, which help couples overcome specific fertility problems.
Q4: How can awareness about reproduction-related issues help in reducing population growth and improving reproductive health?
Answer: Awareness through sex education helps people make informed choices about contraception, safe sexual practices, and family planning, which can reduce unwanted pregnancies and control population growth. It also helps reduce the spread of sexually transmitted infections, promotes menstrual hygiene, and encourages timely medical care for reproductive health issues, thereby improving the overall wellbeing of individuals and communities.
